After installing Windows XP Service Pack 3 I kept getting this message when attempting new updates: 'Error: A problem on your computer is preventing updates from being downloaded.' Re-registering the dlls seemed to fix the issue:
net stop wuauserv regsvr32 wuapi.dll regsvr32 wuaueng.dll regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll regsvr32 wucltui.dll regsvr32 wups.dll regsvr32 wups2.dll regsvr32 wuweb.dll net start wuauserv
After running those commands I was able to install additional updates. Apparently, I got off easy when it comes to the problems with Windows XP SP3.

Dude, you're a legend... this fix works. Save it as a Batch file, run, and all shall be fine. **Ok.. I conceed that may notbe 100% accurate, but it worked for us..
Cheers dude! =)
worked for me as well - thanks!
Holy cow that totally worked -- you rock
now why the ?$\#$ can't MS create an easy to use utility that does this
Hey Josh,
I want to personally thank you for taking the time to share this on the internet. You ought to read the absolutely worthless trash Microsoft published on how to fix this VERY problem we were having installing updates after SP3. And here you come with the perfect solution to the problem!
We all appreciate you!!!
@John et all - glad to hear it worked for you too! That was a bit of a pain to troubleshoot.
Josh, that is excellent stuff! it worked for me as well.
(in my case I had to restart after executing a batch file with your list of commands, for the installs to start working again)
i was beginning to think that I had to go back to Vista, after coming back to XP....
Excellent job Josh :-)
It did work. Great.
Thanks a lot.
How do you find these things?
@Filip - Patience and a lot of luck ;)
Thanks Josh!
Made a batch file with your commands as a previous comment suggested and that fixed the update problem.
Josh, Thanks mate! You've saved me a lot of grief.
And it worked for me as well - thank you!
Thanks Josh!
Worked like a charm! Thanks!
It works! Thanks a lot Josh!
Amazing it worked for me too!!
The WU service did not start (gave me an error) so I had to manually go into services.msc and start WUsvc, BITS svc and WIA svc.. then all worked like a charm!!
I'm using XP Home 32bits (SP3)
Many thanks man!!

Hi Josh,
Can i have one of the script?
Thanks,
Ben
@Ben - Just copy the commands in the post above into a file and save it as updatefix.bat. You can then run it by double clicking the file.
After going back to XP Pro from Vista and putting in SP3 - You are a lifesaver. Thanx Josh.
Holy crap I love you.
Just spent an hour on a client's computer that stupidly installed SP3. I uninstalled it but need to install all the other updates and couldn't. This worked 100%. Nice job.
ive been having problems with Windows Update on my laptop for a while, figured that upgrading to SP3 would fix it... no luck. finally decided to take some time and actually READ the error messages, found your post on the MS forums, came here, and followed the instructions (forgot you could just make a batch file, i eneded up manually typing into the command prompt lol) and sure enough all the updates are now installing.
Thank you very much!
As you can tell by reading this page this works for most people. I want to thank you, I have been looking for a fix for a while. All my updates are now installed.

Thanks man, you are the best. That was so simply. I used it to fix XP Media Center Edition. Just copy above list to notepad and name as updatefix.bat, then double click it and that is it. Thanks again.
